About the Study

The peer-driven conversational volunteers’ programme launched through the Vygo learner support platform ensures that all first-year international students have access to all the necessary tools to improve their language proficiency from day one.

The University of Queensland identified the language difficulties faced by most non-native English speakers amongst their international student cohort, and introduced the conversational volunteers' programme through the Vygo learner support platform as a practical and easily accessible alternative to conventional language assistance programmes. The University was able to connect these students with native English speakers on campus to actively work on improving their language skills and building their self-confidence, at their own pace. This social integration with the local students helped remove the anxiety and self-consciousness associated with speaking the language and interacting
with their peers.
